Holistic Doula Support
A Doula (Greek word) or Birth Attendant is "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth" - Definition of Doula by Merriam-Webster.
These days, doulas (women servants or caregivers) offer support on every level, not just to the mother-to-be or new mother, but also to their partners, baby or babies and family either during pregnancy, during and/or after childbirth.
"Mothering the mother", they enable women and their loved ones the most gratifying pregnancy and birth experiences possible, from pregnancy to birth and into parenthood.
I have had the honour and privilege of being a doula. Sharing the amazing environment that we create together with the new parents and baby is truly magical. Experiencing a life within another, and the unconditional love and joy this brings are all miracle moments. Observing and assisting in the process of birth, and witnessing the crowning and the entry into Mother Earth is indescribable.
In our Asian culture and tradition, the doula lives with the new family for 4-6 weeks and offers assistance where needed. After this time, a celebration of the new mother and her baby/babies will be held where gifts are offered - usually money and/or gold.
